“Nová vlna“ české animace

Devadesátá léta minulého století probíhala ve znamení těžkého úpadku české animované tvorby a postupného rozpouštění velkých tradičních studií do malých, často rodinných ateliérů.

Tato neblahá skutečnost měla ovšem i svá pozitiva. Protože velcí mistři animace nemohli točit filmy, začali učit na uměleckých školách. A, tak jak postupně ztrácela význam umělecká tvorba velkých studií, nabývala ho tvorba studentů. Čeští studenti převzali od profesionálů a svých pedagogů štafetový kolík animovaného umění.

Aniž by to někdo naplánoval nebo předpověděl, v české animaci se zrodilo něco nového, něco sympatického, něco životaschopného, něco smysluplného. Říkejme tomu třeba „nová vlna“, protože tento terminus technicus má v české kinematografii svou tradici a doposud dobrý zvuk. Je symbolem.

Mladí muži a dámy z českých uměleckých vysokých a středních škol začali při plnění svých studijních povinností i po absolutoriu vytvářet díla, která kreativně navazují na tvorbu jejich pedagogů, ale využívají již všech novodobých výdobytků, které s sebou přinesla digitalizace. V nich světu sdělují, že tady jsou, myslí a tvoří a osud jejich domu, ulice, města, země, planety jim není lhostejný.

Toto DVD představuje filmy devíti absolventů či studentů pražské Vysoké školy uměleckoprůmyslové a FAMU.

„Doyeny“ této „devítky“ jsou Galina Miklínová z VŠUP a Michal Žabka z FAMU. Galina Miklínová se již prosadila jako autorka společenských alegorií a neotřelých filmů pro děti a pro Michala Žabku je charakteristický jeho humanistický humor a zaměření na loutkovou animaci.

Václav Švankmajer má již za sebou nominaci na studentského Oscara a krom animace se věnuje volné malbě a režii hraného filmu. S ním přichází do české kinematografie magický realismus.

Lucie Šimková-Sunková již během svého studia obohatila českou animaci o techniku animované malby, v níž dosáhla pozoruhodných výsledků.

Edita Krausová je vynikající grafičkou a malířskou s velkým smyslem pro stylizaci. Má za sebou již řadu výstav a účastí na filmových festivalech.

Jaromír Plachý se výrazně prosazuje svým minimalistickým stylem, smyslem pro zkratku a černý humor. Vynikající jsou jeho internetové animace.

Martin Duda se programově věnuje novým médiím a zejména 3D počítačové animaci a její kombinaci s hraným filmem. Není pro něho modlou, ale nástrojem.

I Zdeněk Durdil ovládá dokonale všechny taje digitální kinematografie. Pomocí nových výrazových prostředků se vyjadřuje k palčivým otázkám současného složitého světa.

Úsměv, humor, smysl pro problémy „malého člověka“ jsou charakteristickými rysy tvorby Anety Kýrové. Je vynikající kreslířkou a tak je její hlavní doménou kreslená animace.

Více než 9 filmů devíti rodících se osobností se na jedno DVD nevejde. Do „nové vlny“ české animace však patří mnohem více autorů z českých vysokých i středních uměleckých škol. Přejme si, aby se jim dařilo.

A “New Wave” of Czech Animation

The 1990s were marked by a severe degradation of Czech animated production and a general breakup of traditionally large studios into small, often family-sized ones.

Nevertheless, this adverse reality also had some positive aspects. Since great professionals were not able to make films, they started to teach in art schools. So as the art production by large studios was declining, films made by students were growing in importance. Czech students took over the “animated” baton from professionals and teachers.

Without anybody planning or forecasting it, Czech animation saw the birth of something new, congenial, viable and meaningful. Let’s call it the “New Wave” as this technical term has a grounded tradition and a solid foundation in the Czech film industry. It is a symbol.

Both as a part of their studies and after graduation, young women and men from Czech art universities and secondary schools have begun to make films that creatively follow up the work of their teachers, while using all the modern conveniences that come hand in hand with digitalization. Through their films, they tell the world that they are here, think and create and that they are not indifferent to what happens in their own homes, street, town, country or planet.

This DVD presents films by nine graduates from the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague and the Film and TV School of the Academy Performing Arts in Prague (FAMU).

The doyens among the nine of them are Galina Miklínová from the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague and Michal Žabka from FAMU. Galina Miklínová has broken through as a director of social allegories and original and novel children’s films; Michal Žabka is best recognized through his humanistic humor and focus on puppet animation.

Václav Švankmajer has been nominated for a student “Oscar” and in addition to animated films, he also engages in free painting and directing live-action movies. He brings magical realism into Czech movie theatres.

While still at school, Lucie Šimková-Sunková enriched Czech animated production with the animated painting technique and has achieved remarkable results in this area.

Edita Krausová is a brilliant graphic designer and a painter with a great sense of stylization. She has had several exhibitions and has competed in film festivals.

Jaromír Plachý has been recognized for his minimalist style, sense of compression and black humor. His Internet animation is outstanding.

Martin Duda has systematically engaged in new media, especially 3D computer animation and its combination with live-action movies. He does not view it as an idol, but rather as a tool.

Zdeněk Durdil has also mastered all secrets of digital film-making. Using new means of expression, he addresses the thorny issues of today’s complicated world.

Smile, humor and understanding of “the little man’s” problems are characteristic of Aneta Kýrová’s films. She is an excellent artist and her main domain is drawn animation.

Nine films by emerging personalities is all one DVD can cover. Nevertheless, the New Wave of Czech animation includes more film-makers from Czech universities and secondary schools. Let’s wish them all the best of luck.
